As I mentioned, we now have shelves in the hallway closet. They have been installed for quite sometime but I still can not quite motivate myself to cram myself into the closet to finish painting them.

In the office, Dave has reworked the floating shelves so that we are now confident they can support a full load of books without crashing down on his precious iMac.

Originally I had envisioned them white but the walnut veneer turned out so well on the fireplace mantel, we decided to try walnut veneer on the shelves as well.

It did not turn out well on the shelves.

Very purple and very cracked. We are going to give it one more shot before we give up and paint the shelves white.

Dave has also begun installing the custom desk base. The desk top is the only original six-panel door that was remaining in the house when we bought it. We restored it several years ago and had a custom glass top cut. 

Dave has now modified the door to fit around the chimney. We bought a glass cutter hoping to cut the glass top to match. After several failed practice cuts on old picture frame glass, we abandoned the idea and (very carefully) hauled the glass to a professsional glass cutter.

Since he was on a roll, Dave also tackled the floating shelves for the nook in the spare bedroom. These shelves will be painted white since it is a darker corner.

We have plans to build a desk in the nook as well. Sometime down the road.

Since the shelves are now installed in the hall closet just waiting to be painted, I have been daydreaming about beautifully organized linen closets.

But it is easy to be excited when for the past year our sheets and towels have been crammed into  the spare bedroom closet with everything else that does not yet have a home.

Sunday at the Show Homes

Since the overcast weather overrode our gardening plans, we found ourselves spending this afternoon visiting the new Victoria Cross development on the Currie Barracks. We were sent there by a contractor to look at potential siding options for our house but couldn't resist the opportunity to take in a couple of the show homes while in the neighborhood.

Although we will not be buying one of these homes anytime soon (starting at $690k for a townhome or $860k for detached home), they did turn out to be a source of useful inspiration.

We discovered two new potential designs for the bench in our front entry - the first bench is actually the current front runner for our own bench design.

And a unique catch system for double closet doors using recessed magnets - much smarter the traditional ball or roller catch.

And of course the siding options we originally set out for.

We do not have any closets on our main floor, so we have been searching for creative ways to create storage in the front entry. Ideally we would like to work it into a bench under the front window.

Progress - Day 163

After working so hard to meet the carpet deadline, Dave and I completely lost steam (plus we were both obviously fighting off a bug) so this has been a slow week. We still managed to cross a couple small items off the list.

Hallway lights.

Carpet runner.

Master bedroom closet shelves.

By coincidence, the carpet installer happened to also be a tiler and when he saw the bathroom tile spread across the second floor he was willing to give us some advice on how to deal with our sloping floors. So now we are working on defying gravity and installing the wall tile from the top down. It will probably take twice as long to install all of the tile but it will guarantee the top chair rail will be straight.

Once the bathroom is back together we will be ready to move back home!

Progress - Day 140

Window trim in the master bedroom, spare bedroom and office. Almost done.

Closet door trim in the master bedroom.

Baseboards in the master bedroom.

Baseboards in the hallway. Or at least half of the hallway.

Attic door is installed.

Refinishing the stairs. The never-ending project.

Still so much trim work to do. The problem with trying to re-create the original trim work.... it is just so time consuming. Dave has been creating all of the window and door trim from scratch.

 

 

We should hopefully be ready for carpet next week. Fingers crossed.
