Sarah Look for a Thrift Store Price

In Sarah 101 Episode 13 "Cool Bachelor Loft", Sarah Richardson transformed a bland loft into a colourful, eclectic space. For lighting, Sarah used vintage warehouse pendants she found at an antique store.

Well right now you can steal Sarah's look with these two industrial lighting fixtures from the Habitat for Humanity Restore in Calgary. For only $50!

Unfortunately they do not quite fit into my design scheme...

As Sarah pointed out, the industrial pendants are designed for much higher lighting levels than a typical house fixture and may need to be converted to take standard light bulbs. These fixtures are listed at 270 W - five times the wattage typical household light bulb!

Barn Light Electric Giveaway

Over the course of our renovation I have spent hours searching for the perfect lighting for the house (ceiling fans, hallway pendants, bedroom pendant, bedroom lamps and office lamp...). A lot of those hours were spent swooning over the vintage lights on the  Barn Light Electric website.

So of course I am very excited to see the Barn Light Electric Online Giveaway!

Bedroom Lamps

After a long wait (involving a postal strike, the package inadvertently being sent back to the US as "undeliverable" and then having to be shipped all over again...) the vintage fan we ordered from etsy has finally arrived and taken up its home in the master bedroom.

Unfortunately the vintage lamps I inherited from my Baba no longer fit in amongst all of the chrome (or fit on the nightstand for that matter), so now we are on the look out for new bedside lamps.

In order to eliminate the clutter on our night stands, I would ideally like to find something that can mount to the wall. Unfortunately, as is typical with lighting, there are just too many options...

Bedroom Lighting

After a long search we thought we had finally decided on a ceiling fan for the master bedroom... the Highpointe fan from Emerson Electric.

That was until we found out it was going to cost $510!

We are more than willing to splurge on lighting but for some reason we just could not justify spending that much money on a ceiling fan. It was still just a ceiling fan after all... and we were not convinced it would actually provide the proper level of light for our room.

So back to the drawing board (or the lighting store) we went and after several days of searching we eventually settled on a simple white linen drum fixture from Maxilite - a Canadian company to boot!

Now I only have pick a light for the dinning room but thankfully that one can wait since I am sick of lighting stores for the time being. Shopping for lighting is a pain in the neck - literally!

Progress - Day 163

After working so hard to meet the carpet deadline, Dave and I completely lost steam (plus we were both obviously fighting off a bug) so this has been a slow week. We still managed to cross a couple small items off the list.

Hallway lights.

Carpet runner.

Master bedroom closet shelves.

By coincidence, the carpet installer happened to also be a tiler and when he saw the bathroom tile spread across the second floor he was willing to give us some advice on how to deal with our sloping floors. So now we are working on defying gravity and installing the wall tile from the top down. It will probably take twice as long to install all of the tile but it will guarantee the top chair rail will be straight.

Once the bathroom is back together we will be ready to move back home!

Seeing White

Dave made fantastic progress with the painting this week - the entire house is primed and all of the ceilings are painted. But now we have run into a hiccup... 

We had intended to paint the entire house the same wall and trim colour we used in the kitchen two years ago and LOVE - General Paint's Powderface (CLW 1034W) and Mosquito Pass (CLW 1041W).

However, the white that looks like this in the kitchen (ignore the mid-renovation picture):

Ok, so maybe I am exagerating a little bit... but it definetly looks more beige than white. And unfortunately, no, the paint was not mixed incorrectly.

Dave has convinced me to let him finish painting one coat on all of the walls in hopes that it will "tone down" once it is not being viewed against the pure white primer. However I have already begun scouring the paint deck looking for an alternate solution for my dream of beautiful crisp clean white walls.
