Avery {2 months}

{2 months}

Growth:

At his six week appointment he weighed 8 lbs 3 oz and at his two month vaccines he weighed in at 9 lbs 3 oz. Avery is growing but still rocking it at the bottom of the growth chart.

He is finally starting to fill out Newborn sized clothes!

Great grandparents

Four generations
Sleeping:

Avery is continuing to be a great sleeper. Once he is down for the night he sleeps right till morning. He is still waking every three hours to feed but goes right back down to sleep. A couple nights he has even stretched it out up to six hours.

Grandparents

Milestones:

He still has a strong hatred for tummy time and it has motivated him to learn to roll from front to back quite quickly. By six weeks he was pretty consistent at rolling over if placed on his stomach. Unfortunately it does not help with the tummy time battle.

Eating:

He has been maintaining his routine of eating every 3 hours. We have started to try to introduce the occasional bottle but he is not a huge fan.

First road trip - Tofino!

Aunty Lana
Firsts:

Avery went on his first road trip at six weeks. We drove out to Tofino so he could meet his Aunty Lana and then spent a few days in Vancouver with his Grandparents. He was a champion traveller - sleeping the majority of the 15 hour drive to Vancouver when an avalanche closed the Coquihalla Highway forcing us to take the long route. He enjoyed walks on the beach despite the rainy weather and even let us enjoy all of our favourite Tofino restaurants.

Personality:

Avery is definitely starting to show his personality! He is not a passive baby. He never stops moving. He needs to be active and entertained. He is not a cuddly baby. He dislikes sitting and loves to face outwards to see the world.

Avery {1 month}

Avery is now 4 months old! Where does time go? I am hoping to get caught up with monthly update posts to document his growth. Bare with me while I do...

{1 month}

Growth:

At birth Avery weighed 6 lbs 3 oz which put him at the very bottom of the growth chart - below the 5th percentile - which bought us an overnight stay in the hospital so they could monitor his blood sugar levels.

I had expected a small baby so I made sure to buy extra small diapers (Bambo Natural Preemie Size) but we were completely caught off guard by the fact that a 6 lb baby drowns in Newborn sized clothes! Thankfully we had many willing volunteers to head out shopping for us to buy Preemie sized sleepers!

By his two week appointment he was up to 6 lbs 8 oz!

Coming home from the hospital
Eating:

Thankfully Avery was a champ at breastfeeding right off the bat. He quickly settled into a routine of eating every 3 hours.

Family cuddles

Sleeping:

As with most newborns, he sleeps all the time!

Before Avery was born, we had planned that the baby would be sleeping in the crib in their own room from day one. Dave is extremely against co-sleeping due to his experiences working at the Children's Hospital and I was extremely nervous about the dogs and cat who have always had free-reign of our master bedroom. The crib was simply the safest place in our opinion.

Of course things never go according to plan! The complications of Avery's delivery meant I was pretty much immobile for the first week so getting Avery in and out of the crib in another room was just not feasible. Thankfully my parent's were able to buy us a bassinet before we got discharged from the hospital so he could sleep safely right beside us in the master bedroom.

At first, Avery had a hard time clearing his mucous so Dave kept trying to raise the head of the bassinet but every thing he tried just caused the basket to slip in the frame. He asked the midwives for advice at one of our home visits and she we try to prop up the frame instead of the basket. She got a good laugh when she returned for her next visit to see the frame propped up with Dave's nursing textbooks!

Why did you put him in a cage?

Milestones:

Avery has been able to hold up his head since day one. He is constantly making Dave proud with how strong he is and how much muscle tone he has already.

First family walk

Personality:

At first Avery was such a relaxed, easy baby but we are starting to see a strong personality develop! He does have his fussy periods but they always seem to be justified - most commonly gas or reflux. He is very alert and always studying the world with his big blue eyes.

He generally seems to be a pretty happy little guy. Avery smiles and giggles in his sleep. It melts my heart.

How to: Refinish Hardwood Stairs

One of the few things we left 'original' in our house was the hardwood stairs to the second floor. It simply would have been to difficult to remove and replace them. We could have simply carpeted over them as was the case when we bought the house but we both loved the look of wood steps with white risers and a carpet runner. So we had to bight the bullet and refinish them.

This project is not for the faint of heart. It involves hours (and hours, and hours) spent hunched over the stairs, cramped hands from scraping and sanding, and pounding headaches from paint removal.

But the end result is worth it.

Before:

After:

Materials:
  • Heat gun
  • Scraper or putty knife
  • Palm sander
  • Sandpaper
  • Stainable wood filler
  • Stain
  • Lint-free cloths
  • Clear varathane
  • Foam brush

Step 1: Preparation

Remove the old carpet, including any staples, glue, etc. Our carpet left behind about a million staples which had to be pulled one by one. I found that needle nose pliers and a putty knife were the best tools for removing the staples but I am sure there are more appropriate tools out there.

Step 2: Remove Old Finishes

Our stairs had been painted and stained about a million times in the past. There was every type of finish imaginable. On the risers and baseboards, we only had to remove paint so we were able to use a heat gun. Aim the heat gun at the paint until it begins to bubble. The bubbled paint will slide right off with a paint scrapper or putty knife.

On the steps, we not only had to remove the old paint but all of the old stains or varathanes. For this we resorted to paint stripper. Paint stripper works best if you apply it, cover it in plastic and allow it to sit for a short period of time until the paint begins to bubble - check the recommendations on your specific product. Then use a paint scrapper or putty knife to remove the bubbled paint.

It is important to make sure the area is well ventilated... And make sure you have Advil on hand - this step guarantees a pounding headache!

Because we were planning to install a carpet runner, we chose to only refinish the edge of the steps that would be visible. It saved us a considerable amount of time and effort.

Step 3: Sand

Using a course sandpaper, such as 80 grit, remove any left over finish and stripper. A palm sander or Dremel Multi-max fitted with a sanding attachment will make the work go much faster.

Step 4: Patch

Fill in any cracks and nail holes with wood filler. For any particularily large holes, we have found that Bondo Body Filler works better than wood filler as it does shrink and it dries in a fraction of the time, although it does stink all most as bad as the paint stripper. It is meant for automotive body repair and can be found in most automotive part stores - in Calgary, try Canadian Tire or Princess Auto. Warning - it is not the same as the Bondo Fibreglass products sold at Home Depot.

Step 5: Sand Again

And again and again... Each time use progressively finer sandpaper. I used 80 grit and 120 grit.

Step 6: Apply Stain

Step 7: Apply Clear Top Coat

Apply several coats of a clear top coat - we used five (yes, five) coats to ensure a durable, shiney finish. I recommend using a waterbased product for ease of clean up and to prevent any further headaches.

Step 7: Paint Risers

We used General Paint's Monamel since it is an extremely durable finish. However it does take considerably longer to dry. Make sure you caulk all of the joints to create a more finished look.

Step 8: Install Carpet Runner

We left this step up to the professionals!

Step 9: Ta Da!
