Three Cheers
If I find a product/company I love, I let everyone know. If I find a product/company I don't love, I definetly let everyone know. It always makes me happier when it is the later situation and I am happy to have one to share!
I have always loved my Kohler products (bathroom pedestal, two toilets, kitchen faucet, kitchen sink and powder room faucet) for their appearance but this week, I was once again reminded of their fantastic customer service.
When Dave froze the plumbing in the house, it cracked the aerator in our kitchen faucet. We had been living without it since then but this week I finally decided to cross it off the "to-do" list. I tried to find a replacement aerator at Home Depot but they only carried Moen parts and I was not certain they would be compatible with our Kohler faucet (how come it seems there is never a Home Depot associate around when you need one but when you are just browsing you have to fight them off like flies...) so I called the Kohler service number to order the proper aerator fully expecting to pay $13.50 for the aerator and $7.95 (or more) for shipping because that was the price listed on their parts website.
I gave the customer service agent the model number, make, finish, etc and explained that our aerator is cracked. He didn't ask why it was cracked, he didn't ask if we had done anything that might count as voiding the warranty, he didn't ask for my credit card number. He simply asked if the faucet was leaking, reiterated that Kohler products are guaranteed to be leak free for the life of the product, apologized that it will take two weeks for the aerator to be shipped from the US and wished me a good day.
We had a similar experience with their costumer service when we tried to order new cartridges a year ago - Kohler products are definitely worth the extra money!

Bedroom Lamps
After a long wait (involving a postal strike, the package inadvertently being sent back to the US as "undeliverable" and then having to be shipped all over again...) the vintage fan we ordered from etsy has finally arrived and taken up its home in the master bedroom.
Unfortunately the vintage lamps I inherited from my Baba no longer fit in amongst all of the chrome (or fit on the nightstand for that matter), so now we are on the look out for new bedside lamps.
In order to eliminate the clutter on our night stands, I would ideally like to find something that can mount to the wall. Unfortunately, as is typical with lighting, there are just too many options...

Blue Ceilings
I have always loved the dreamy look of blue ceilings and am seriously contemplating painting the ceiling in our front entry.
Originally I had thought of doing an asian-inspired motif to match our light fixture from Thailand but now I am leaning towards clean, classic blue. The only problem... which blue?

Sunday Shower
This weekend I had the honour of hosting a baby shower for my friend Shauna who is expecting a little boy in early August. It turned out to be a fabulous day - good weather, great friends and lots of fun.
I was happy to have a non-house related project to tackle. It was the first time I broke out the craft supplies since October. The food turned out fantastic - if I do say so myself - I am hoping to share a couple recipes on our food blog over the next couple days.

Presto Chango
Getting soapstone is a bit anti-climatic. Even though the stone has been cut and polished is still not shiney like granite or marble. It arrives looking more like bland concrete than lustreous stone.
In order to give soapstone its luster you have to treat it with mineral oil. It is pretty amazing what a little oil can do!
It is still not the deep black that I envision when I dream of soapstone but it is still a gorgeous peice of stone and is going to look fantastic against the walnut hardwood.
After all of our fun with levelling cement, the soapstone hearth is finally in place. Unfortunately the fireplace doesn't look like much yet...
Rest assured - we are planning to build a new wood mantel similar to the one below that I spotted at Rouge Restaurant. Except we will be painting the mantel white with the top ledge in walnut and will be installing a cast iron gas fireplace insert.
